Charles Gillott

Charles Gillott has specialised in clinical negligence and personal injury law since he qualified as a solicitor in 1986.  He has been a member of The Law Society’s Clinical Negligence Specialist Panel since its inception in 1995.  He has also been a member of the referral panel of AvMA, the charity supporting victims of medical accidents.  Charles has handled many claims for people who have suffered very serious injury, in particular cerebral palsy following trauma around the time of birth.  Other notable cases in recent years include a successful claim for a patient who suffered severe spinal injury after being allowed to leave a psychiatric hospital prematurely, a claim for a patient who lost an eye after failure to treat skin cancer affecting her face, a claim for a patient who had a failed hip replacement operation performed in a private hospital, with NHS funding and a claim for a patient who lost her fingers and toes after suffering widespread infection following gall bladder removal surgery.

Charles has lectured on clinical negligence and medical law and has also written on the subject.  He has brought claims to a successful conclusion through mediation.

His past experience also includes representing families at a public enquiry into the abuse of autistic children at school, acting for claimants in a number of group claims involving pharmaceutical products, the abuse of children and vulnerable patients, professional negligence actions against solicitors, a case concerning the confidentiality of medical reports and a claim concerning unlawful detention which was heard at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Charles also has extensive experience of personal injury litigation, including catastrophic injury claims and fatal accident claims.

Charles has been described by Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession as a “well respected practitioner who handles all manner of claims”. The 2010 edition of the Guide mentioned his “superb judgment and personable attitude”.
