Domestic violence covers many types of abuse. It is not just one person physically attacking another it can include emotional, sexual and financial abuse.
You do not need to live in the same property to experience domestic violence. victims can be men and women in any type of relationship. Public funding (legal aid) is available to all victims of domestic violcnece who wish to take legal proceedings to protect themselves or their family from the violence.
You may wish to consider applying for a non-molestation order (injunction) to prohibit the perpetrator of domestic violence from threatening or using violence against you. Breach of a non-molestation order is now a criminal offence, and this means you can immediately contact the police to have the perpetrator arrested. the police and Crown Prosecution Service will then be able to start a criminal prosecution against them.
The Courts also have powers to determine who should live in the family home in the short term. The court can make an order that bar the perpetrator from living or coming within a certain distance of the property.
